The Dandenong Ranges, also known as Dandenongs are a set of beautiful low mountain ranges. They rise only up to 633 metres high at the Mount Dandenong. The ranges are covered with dense temperate rainforest. The tall Mountain Ash trees and thick ferny undergrowths forms the dense flora at the ranges. The steeply weathered valleys, gullies and the rolling hills make it an adventurous as well as a romantic getaway. The ranges look breathtakingly beautiful and are full of scenic views.

Location of Dandenong Ranges

The ranges are located about 35 kms from the centre of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. The gorgeous ranges can be seen from most of the parts of Melbourne.

History of Dandenong Ranges

The original name of Mount Dandenong, during the early period was Corhanwarrabu.  For the and the Woiworung people from the Kulin nation and for the Bunurong people from Western Port , this was the place for summer hunting.

The first European expedition in the Dandenong ranges happened in the year 1840 by Daniel Bunce, a botanist. The settlers started moving in by 1850s and the wholesale clearing started. The forest was established in the year 1867.

Things To Do

If you want to enjoy the scenic views of the valley, hop into the Puffing Billy steam railway. It will take you across the tall trees and ferns.

There are many historic gardens in the range that will introduce you to the past of the valley. Located at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges is the Warratina Lavender Farm which is stunning. Another place where you must visit is the National Rhododendron Gardens in the suburbs of the valley. There are also many antique shops across Sassafras from where you can pick up souvenirs as a mark of remembrance of your journey.

The Dandenong ranges are a paradise for the adventure junkies. Cycling across the hills and valleys is enough to give an adrenaline rush. There are many other adventure sports that can give chills to your spine.

You can also take a walk in the bushes with your spouse. Walking hand in hand with your spouse, amidst the nature is a very romantic experience.

The Dandenong Ranges also have some picturesque falls and lake that you should not miss, like Emerald Lake, Olinda Falls and Sherbrooke Falls.
