The name “Gotye” is a pronunciation respelling of “Gauthier”, the French cognate of his Dutch given name “Wouter”.
Walter was the English equivalent of his name and that’s what his parents  chose for him to use in school.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts at University of Melbourne.

Somebody That I Used To Know

Length: 4:04

Release: 2011

Opening Lyrics:

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad that it was over

Eyes Wide Open

Length: 3:11

Release: 2010

Opening Lyrics:

With our eyes wide open, we—
With our eyes wide open, we—
So this is the end of the story
Everything we had, everything we did
Is buried in dust, and this dust is all that’s left of us
And only a few ever worried
While the signs were clear, they had no idea
You just get use to livin’ in fear
Or give up, when you can’t even picture your future
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open
We walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we—
(Walk the plank, with our eyes wide open, we—)
Yeah, we walk the plank with our eyes wide open, we—

Smoke and Mirrors

Length: 5:13

Release: 2013

Opening Lyrics:

You’re a fraud, and you know it
But it’s too good to throw it all away
Anyone would do the same
You’ve got ’em going
And you’re careful not to show it
Sometimes you even fool yourself a bit
It’s like magic
But it’s always been a smoke and mirrors game
Anyone would do the same
So now that you’ve arrived, well, you wonder
What is it that you’ve done to make the grade
And should you do the same?
(Is that too easy?)
Are you only tryin’ to please them?

Somebody That I Used To Know – Teisto Remix

Length: 4:33

Release: 2017

Opening Lyrics:

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn’t have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don’t even need your love

Somebody That I Used To Know – 4FRNT Remix

Length: 5:18

Release:2018

Opening Lyrics:

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn’t have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don’t even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn’t have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
