What you first have to understand is that goals may not always be realistic. Many people set goals which are more like fantasies. Maybe they want to be the world champion of some sport, or make a billion dollars, or marry a supermodel. These types of goals can actually extremely harmful if you obsesses over them or actually believe they are possible. This is why it’s important that you set S.M.A.R.T goals i.e. goals which are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.
Another reason why it’s not always a great idea to achieve your goals, is because they may actually be harmful. A good example of this is if you’re trying to lose weight. What could start off as a positive goal could eventually become negative. For instance, you could end up developing an eating disorder.
Here’s another excellent example. Did you know that more than 300 people have died while attempting to climb Mt. Everest? This happens because many people are completely obsessed with reaching the top. This leads to them ignoring things like adverse weather conditions, and this is why they die. The point, as always, is to practice moderation. Think carefully about your goals. Are they good for you, and could they actually cause your harm in the long run?
In addition to this, there’s another great reason why you may not always want to achieve your goals. This is something you’ll quickly realize once you’ve ticked a few goals off your list. You see, the great thing about goals is that they change us. The purpose of goal achievement is really that it makes us a different and better person. What this is that your goals will change as well. You may lose interest in certain goals, or drastically alter them. What you have to realize is that this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve given up on your goals. It’s simply a part of the goal realization process.
Finally, setting goals isn’t actually suitable for some people. Maybe you’re a free thinker who prefers to follow your intuition. If you’re one of these people then your idea of success could be completely different to another person’s. For example, maybe you’re really not interested in making a million dollars, or reaching a certain BMI. Whatever the case, the most important thing is that you’re happy and fulfilled.
