80s nostalgia isn’t only about the movies, music, and fashion. Anyone truly in love with this period knows there are dozens of iconic brands and consumer items associated with this decade. While many of these were flash in the pan gimmicks (which were almost immediately forgotten) many of these products became iconic brands and are still around today. Cabbage Patch Kids

When talking about What items were popular in the 80s, Cabbage Patch Kids will always top the list. These ordinary looking dolls caused a sensation when first released back in the 80s, and are probably the most popular item of this period. We’re not kidding. According to 80s historians demand was so high that some stores were actually the scenes of violent fights and even riots.

Jellies Sandals

The best way to describe these sandals is that they were basically the Crocs of their day. Cheap, plastic, utterly hideous, and sold in a variety of garish colors. That being said, they were comfortable.

Nintendo Entertainment System

When thinking about what items were popular in the 80s, the NES might be the greatest. This is one of the few 80s products which became iconic and truly stood the test of time. The NES caused a true revolution and gaming and single handedly saved videos back in the 1980s. The release of this console was also accompanied by some truly legendary games, the best example being Mario Brothers.

Reebok Pumps

These shoes were basically gimmicks. Despite this they sold in their millions. The gimmick was basically that the shoes had inflatable air pockets inside. You could pump these up so that the shoe would fit better. Whether this was actually true who knows.

Snap Bracelets

These bracelets were essentially pieces of metal wrapped in fabric. The bracelet was flat until you “snapped” it onto your wrist. At that point it would curl around your wrist. While there was nothing special about these bracelets, it was the novelty of snapping them around your wrist which made them so popular.

Tie in cereal

Marketing with cereal was massively popular during the 80s. Back then, the majority of media franchises released their own cereals. This included the most popular brand Mr. T cereal (from the A team.) Along with this you had Ghostbusters, E.T., and Star Wars cereals.

Video Game Arcades

Today, video game arcades are all but gone. The machines are considered collectors’ items and go for thousands of dollars. What killed this industry was the advent of home video game consoles like the NES. This made gaming more easier, more convenient, and best of all cheaper.

The Walkman

Probably one of the most iconic 80s brands, the Walkman caused a revolution when initially released. For the first time in history music was truly mobile. The device proved so popular that Sony is rumoured to have sold more than a billion cassette tapes by 1985.

Care Bears

Care Bears are most famous due to the ever popular cartoon. But did you know these bears actually started out as toys? It was only the massive popularity of the toys which led to the creation of the cartoon.

Trial Pursuit

Believe it or not this classic game was actually released in 1979. It proved enormously successful and by 1985, more than 20 million sets were sold. Today, Trivial Pursuit has sold an incredible 100 million units and is still played around the world.
