International Day to Eradicate Poverty is celebrated every year on October 17th. Do you Know? A memorial stone was unveiled by Joseph Wresinski in 1987 in Paris, France, to remember victims of Poverty, starvation, violence, and dread in the Trocadéro’s Human Rights and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadéro, where 100,000 people gathered. For the first time in 1992, the United Nations proclaimed October 17th as International Day to End Poverty in honour of Wresinski.

A primary objective of the 2030 Agenda is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere as the greatest global challenge of today and a prerequisite for global sustainable development.

History

Do You Know? More than 100,000 people gathered in Paris, France, on October 17th, 1987, to pay tribute to those who were shackled by Poverty. The event took place at the potential site of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. On the same day, a commemorative stone was unveiled by Father Joseph Wresinski, a humanitarian. Condemning Poverty as a violation of human rights, the memorial stone urged people to unite against it.
