Color Therapy: Definition, Types, Techniques, Efficacy

Color therapy or chromotherapy is a kind of alternative medicine that utilize the healing property of colors by balancing the energy which a person is lacking. It can be an unbalance in physical, mental, emotional or even spiritual energy. Such healing rooms are often facilitated in alternative health practitioner’s clinic.

The color therapist could apply light and color by using tools and visualizations. Objects like gemstones, candles, colored lamps, crystals, glass prisms, colored fabrics, lasers and lenses can be use as a tool to deliver color therapy.

Color Therapy – Meaning

Color is a form of visible electromagnetic wave. Each of the color reflected in the rainbow have its unique healing properties. Color helps to restore balance in a blockage or imbalance of the energy. These imbalances create diseases. The use of color would restore the vitality of the body when the colors are projected to the body, which are then absorbed by the chakra centers. According to India Ayurvedic medicine, there are 7 main chakras which are located along the spine.

Located at the base of the spine is the first chakra point and corresponds to the red color. The second chakra is at the pelvic area and corresponds to orange color. Third chakra for yellow and is around the solar plexus. Green color is the fourth chakra and is near the heart. Blue: Fifth chakra and is around the throat, The sixth and seventh chakra is at the head, both corresponding to indigo and violet respectively.

It is already a known fact that some people suffer from depression during the lack of sunlight. The most famous scientifically proven color study is Lusher’s color test. It was developed by Max Luscher in the 1990’s. Scientists found out that each color brings different emotional reactions to different individuals. These reactions are highly individual.

Color healing

is also a form of spiritual force which forms a link between the physical bodies and the higher levels of consciousness and spiritual growth. By creating the link between inner and outer bodies, the progress of oneness will ultimately help a person in maintaining good health and well-being.

Besides that, traditional color wisdom also mentioned that each color, besides corresponding to certain organs, also has special physical effects. Red for example stimulates brain activity, increases heart rate, blood pressure and even self-confidence. Orange stimulates appetite and fosters sociability. Yellow relieves depression and create awareness, understandings and perceptions. Green has a soothing effect, relaxing and relief stress. It offers a sense of renewal and harmony. Blue is often associated with knowledge and relaxation while indigo is related to intuition and imagination.

Color therapy can even be use in normal day activity for example when you choose a new piece of furniture or decide to paint your wall with certain colors. Try to read on some colors and their effects and you will be surprise how they could change your mood.
