Wall art lighting: features and requirements

Wall art lighting is a complex and responsible task. The main purpose of art gallery lighting is to create a light image of the presented exhibits to provide an emotional and psychological impact on visitors. Paintings are unique masterpieces, works of art. They require careful treatment and the creation of special conditions for their safety. It is known that the ultraviolet radiation of the sun’s spectrum has a detrimental effect on painting objects — it causes the destruction of colors and their fading, as a result of which the canvases lose their artistic value. Therefore, gallery lighting systems play an extremely important role.

Rules of a perfect lighting for gallery

In art galleries, artificial lighting is used exclusively. The main object of the art gallery are paintings. The main task of exhibit lights is the correct illumination of paintings. There are a number of important requirements for lighting an art gallery:

  1. The light should not interfere with the perception of the paintings, their surface should not form glare, shadows or sharp contrasts from interior items.
  2. Lighting for wall artwork should ensure the correct transmission of the colors of the images of the paintings, there should not be their distortion. Optimal color rendition emphasizes the color scheme of the paintings.
  3. The normalized level of illumination of the art gallery should not exceed 150 lux for oil paintings, not more than 50 lux for paintings made in gouache and watercolor.
  4. Wall art lighting should be soft, dim, slightly muffled, pleasing to the human eye, ensuring the preservation of the brightness of the colors of the paintings and their resistance to destruction.

LED lightning is able to create fairly good lighting and provide high-quality color reproduction. Moreover, there is no ultraviolet radiation in their spectrum.

Features of choosing exhibition lighting

Specialists use various types of lighting for gallery. They need to be set at the correct distance from the paintings and are usually best placed above the paintings. In addition, the best effect of perceiving the picture is achieved if the light rays fall on the picture from top to bottom. In this case, the paintings should not heat up. Heating paintings leads to the destruction of colors and even damage to the canvas. Moreover, pictures must be protected from ultraviolet radiation and side light, not forming shadows and glare. Professional wall art lighting is produced with special protective glasses that can protect the picture from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays.

LED lamps are a kind of gallery lighting systems, which are stable and reliable in operation and provide high-quality illumination of paintings. LED luminaires are installed on a suspended busbar, which ensures their correct location and gives a good luminous flux. A particularly good effect is achieved when using LED spotlights. They do not emit ultraviolet rays and are highly safe. Therefore, their use for lighting an art gallery is the most optimal. Hence, exhibition lighting requires competent choosing and planning. In addition, the approach to lighting an art gallery is individual and, therefore, the project should be developed by specialists based on the specific site and situation.
