Is Uluru the Biggest Rock in the World –

Ayers Rock

One of the most beautiful places in the world is Australia. The world down under is magnificent. Every single place in this country is so full of charm and beauty. Some places leave you spellbound. Uluru is one of the many great marvels of Australia. It is beauty at its best.

Location of Uluru

Uluru, also known as the Ayers Rock is located in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National park.

History of Uluru

Uluru was inhabited by humans more than ten thousand years ago. Uluru was first mapped by Europeans in the year 1872.  William Gosse spotted Uluru and named it Ayers Rock. In the year 1936, tourists first arrived at Uluru. European settlement started in the initial months of 1940.

Attributes

It is one of the country’s great landmarks. This huge rock has a total circumference of 9.4 kilometres and stands 348 meters high. The most fascinating thing about this rock is the way it changes its colour during different times of the day, it is just unbelievable.

Things To Do

From Alice Springs, Urulu is around 4-5hours drive away. Transportation is not at all an issue. You can either choose a car, bus or a train. On the way, there is a place called Mt Polhill, a roadside stop where you can camp. Driving to the destination is altogether a different experience. For the first 50 km, you will get an open highway to drive on and then drive 60km off-road. The sheer pleasure of driving on a desert is always filled with awesomeness, and if you are lucky enough, you will spot a mob of kangaroos.

The next 20kms will take you to the Rainbow Valley. A great place with gas BBQs, a couple of interesting walks and course the beautiful rock formation. You can stay here and relax for a while. Soak in the beauty of the rock, but make sure you don’t stay there for long. Missing the sunset is probably the worst mistake that you could commit. On your way to the next 250 hours, you will find occasional stops and then you will reach Mt Connor lookout. It’s a flat-topped stone formation filling the horizon, it was so huge and majestic that for a moment you will forget your original plan and will think of staying by Mt Connor. But, keep in mind that there is no public access thing and so its better to resume your journey to the original destination, Uluru.
