About Robert Crais

Robert Crais created the Elvis Cole series of best-selling novels. He was born in Louisiana and grew up in a blue collar family of oil refinery workers and police officers along the Mississippi River. He purchased a secondhand paperback copy of Raymond Chandler’s The Little Sister at the age of fifteen, which helped inspire his lifelong love of writing, Los Angeles, and crime fiction. Other writers who have influenced Dashiell Hammett include Ernest Hemingway, Robert B. Parker, and John Steinbeck.

After years of amateur film-making and writing short fiction, he moved to Hollywood in 1976, where he went on to write scripts for major television series like Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey, and Miami Vice, in addition to numerous series pilots and Movies-of-the-Week for major networks. In addition to being nominated for an Emmy for his work on Hill Street Blues, Lawrence is most proud of his 4-hour NBC miniseries, Cross of Fire, which the New York Times called “a searing and powerful documentary of the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s.”
