Book Review of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

What do I like most? Decluttering one’s home is essential to reorganize home and bring things in order.

“The question of what you want to own is a question of how you want to live your life” This quote throws ample light on the philosophy of the writer. It may surprise anyone that how cleaning one’s house can give a spiritual experience? Besides cleaning house, mind and body get detoxicated too. It may appear flimsy, but the writer convinces the reader with her thoughts through logic.

While one may want to move away from an item in one’s home, they have to ask? The factors to be considered are on what is one’s relationship with the thing? The item may be a coffee maker or a postcard. Keep only those possessions that instantly remind one with a splendid memory, giving you happiness. The author says one may have a special relationship with things. Clothes, books, technology, and miscellaneous items first have to be sorted out.

The author gives a message behind decluttering one’s home. Having taken care of taking out useless items, one may ensure oneself with a new mindset.

Giving her example to part away with items of no use, she felt free. Now she had enough space, and the area remained organized.

Further, the writer suggests not to overcomplicate the tidying process. The simple questions one needs to ask oneself before starting tidying up are:

  1. What is the purpose of this object?
  2. Has it fulfilled its purpose already?
  3. The reason behind buying the thing.
  4. When was the item purchased?
  5. How did the thing land in the house?

So while tidying, one needs to understand the rationale reasoning and powerful gut reaction carefully. For example, gift cards hold importance because they bring joy and happiness. Such gift-cards cards are worth keeping in the house.
