About Phyllis A. Whitney

The American mystery writer Phyllis Ayame Whitney (1903 – 2008) is best known for her work. She wrote mysteries for both the juvenile and adult markets, many of which featured exotic locations, a rarity for her genre. The New York Times once called her “The Queen of the American Gothics”.

Born in Japan to American parents, she spent her early years in Asia. A total of more than seventy novels were written by Whitney. She won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1961 for The Mystery of the Haunted Pool and again in 1964 for The Mystery of the Hidden Hand. She received the Grand Master Award from the MWA in 1988. Whitney died of pneumonia on February 8, 2008, at the age of 104.
