About Michael Morpurgo
Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been adapted into films. He also writes screenplays and libretti for operas. He was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1943, and was evacuated to Cumberland during the last years of the Second World War. He returned to London, and later moved to Essex. His brief and unsuccessful military service led him to pursue a teaching career and writing career. He quit teaching after ten years in order to start ‘Farms for City Children’ with his wife. They have three farms in Devon, Wales, and Gloucestershire where inner city schoolchildren can stay and work with the animals. His work was publicly recognized in 1999 when he and his wife were awarded the MBE for their services to youth. He was promoted to Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003. In 2004, he was elected to the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL). For his services to literature and charity, he was knighted in 2018. Having been a father and grandfather, children have always had a special place in his heart. His family spends every summer in the Scilly Isles, the setting of three of his books
