About Michael Connelly
Michael Connelly realized he wanted to be a writer after reading Raymond Chandler’s books at the University of Florida. After he decided this path, he majored in journalism and minored in creative writing – a curriculum in which Harry Crews taught.
Upon graduation from college in 1980, Connelly worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, primarily covering crime. He wrote about police and crime in Fort Lauderdale during the height of the murder and violence wave that swept South Florida during the cocaine wars. He spent months interviewing survivors of a major airline crash in 1986 with two other reporters. In their magazine story about the crash and the survivors, they were short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. Additionally, the magazine story launched Connelly into the upper levels of journalism, landing him a position as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, one of the nation’s largest newspapers, and bringing him to the same city in which his literary hero, Chandler, had lived.

One Final Bonus – Michael Connelly Quote
“Los Angeles was the kind of place where everybody was from somewhere else and nobody really droppped anchor. It was a transient place. People drawn by the dream, people running from the nightmare. Twelve million people and all of them ready to make a break for it if necessary. Figuratively, literally, metaphorically — any way you want to look at it — everbody in L.A. keeps a bag packed. Just in case.”
