About Mervyn Peake
Mervyn Laurence Peake was an English modernist writer, illustrator, artist, and poet. Known for what are commonly referred to as the Gormenghast books, Peake intended to complete a lengthy cycle, following Titus Groan from cradle to grave, but his untimely death prevented completion of the cycle, which is now often but incorrectly called a trilogy. His works are often compared to those of his older contemporary J.R.R. Tolkien, but his surreal fiction was influenced more by his early love of Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stevenson than Tolkien’s study of mythology and philology.
