About Mary Downing Hahn

Growing up, I lived in a small shingled house on Guilford Road in College Park, Maryland. Our block was loaded with kids my age. The games we played outside included “Kick the Can” and “Mother, May I,” as well as cowboy and outlaw games that often ended in fighting over who shot whom. During the summer, we went on day-long explorations into forbidden territory — the woods on the other side of the tracks, the creek that wound through College Park, and the University of Maryland’s experimental farm.

As an elementary school student, I was known as the class artist. I loved to read and draw but I hated writing reports. It was requirements such as outline writing, perfect penmanship, and following directions that killed my interest in writing. All those facts — who cared what the principal products of Chile were? Math and writing reports were almost equally boring to me.
