About Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She and her three sisters, Anna, Elizabeth, and May were educated by their father, philosopher/teacher Bronson Alcott, and raised by their mother, Abigail May.

During her childhood, Louisa lived in Boston and Concord, Massachusetts, where she visited Ralph Waldo Emerson’s library, traveled with Henry David Thoreau into nature, and performed in the barn at Hillside (now Hawthorne’s “Wayside”).
