International Day of Persons With Disabilities 2022 Theme

International Day of Persons With Disabilities

International Day of Persons With Disabilities is celebrated every year on 3 December. Since 1992, the United Nations has promoted the third Sunday in December as the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities.” It has been noticed in many parts of the world, with differing degrees of success. People with disabilities are encouraged to participate in the day’s activities to raise awareness of disability issues. It also aims to raise awareness of the benefits of integrating people with disabilities into all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life. Do you know? The day was known as “International Day of Disabled Persons” before being renamed in 2007.

Human rights, sustainable development, and peace and security all depend on the inclusion of people with disabilities. Furthermore, the 2030 Agenda’s goal of leaving no one behind is crucial. It’s not only about justice; it’s an investment in the future. Existing disparities are being exacerbated due to the worldwide crisis of COVID-19, which reveals the magnitude of exclusion and emphasises the importance of promoting disability inclusion. One billion individuals have impairments, making them one of the most marginalised groups in our society, and this crisis has particularly severely struck them in terms of deaths.

History

The International Year of Disabled Persons (1981) was established in 1976 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). To achieve these goals, it outlined a strategy focusing on opportunity equality, disability rehabilitation, and disability prevention at the national, regional, and international levels. People with disabilities have the right to participate entirely and equally in society, enjoy equal living circumstances, and have an equal share in the benefits of socio-economic progress. The theme of the International Year of Disabled Persons was “Full Participation and Equality.” The General Assembly designated 1983–1992 as the United Nations Decade for Disabled Persons to provide governments and organisations with a deadline for implementing the World Programme of Action’s recommendations.

The United Nations has to lead by example and enhance its standards and performance on disability inclusion across all pillars of work, from the headquarters to the field. Through the UN’s Disability Inclusion Strategy, a solid basis is laid for long-term and significant progress on disability inclusion. It submitted the Secretary-second General’s report on the UN system’s efforts to achieve the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy by 2020 in October 2021. An emphasis on disability-inclusive COVID-19 reaction and recovery is included in this study due to the COVID-19’s effect on people with disabilities.

Importance & How To Celebrate

Check out where you live and the areas you frequently visit. Ask the business owner, mall management, and your elected authorities if there are no facilities for individuals with disabilities in place. It is required by law. Ask the nurses at an outpatient clinic or a senior centre if they know of anybody who needs assistance. Let me know if you need anything. In some cases, the simplest activities, such as delivering medicine, dropping off the mail, or picking up some groceries at the supermarket, may make a massive difference to someone who has a physical or mental handicap.

Irritation might set in when you’re exhausted, stressed, and pressed for time. If someone is causing you to be late, do not snap at them. They might be disabled people. If this is the case, their lives will likely never change, but your troubles are more likely to come and go. In the same way, don’t allow their lousy humour to spoil your day. A grin may go a long way towards putting things right. It is not uncommon for people with disabilities to feel marginalised by society. People speed by them as they go about their everyday lives, paying them little or no attention. Make eye contact, smile, and be ready to provide a helping hand if someone appears to be in need today.

To make a problematic existence a bit simpler for a person with a disability, the parking spot directly in front of the pharmacy, sloped curbs at crossroads with textured mats in place, the buttons to open doors automatically, and even elevators on the subway—are all in place. Observe today’s amenities, then note how few there are. To ensure that companies and governments are complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act, it was established that people with disabilities have the same rights as others. The Americans with Disabilities Act is a particular set of requirements, and everyone interested in the field should be conversant with them.
