About Ian Rankin

Born in 1960 in Fife, Ian Rankin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1982 and then spent three years writing novels while working towards a PhD in Scottish literature. The first Rebus novel was published in 1987; the Rebus books have been translated into 22 languages and are bestsellers on several continents.

He was elected as a Hawthornden Fellow. Also a past winner of the Chandler-Fulbright Award, he received two Dagger Awards for short stories and a Gold Dagger for fiction. Ian Rankin has also received honorary degrees from Abertay, St Andrews, and Edinburgh universities.
