About Ian McEwan

In 1970, he received his BA degree in English Literature from the University of Sussex, and later his MA degree in English Literature from the University of East Anglia.

He has earned critical acclaim throughout the world for his works. In 1976, he received the Somerset Maugham Award for his first collection of short stories, First Love, Last Rites; in 1987, he received the Whitbread Novel Award; in 1993, he was granted the Prix Femina Etranger; and in 1999, he received the German Shakespeare Prize. In 1998, he won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction for Amsterdam after being shortlisted numerous times. He won the WH Smith Literary Award (2002), National Book Critics’ Circle Fiction Award (2003), Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction (2003), and Santiago Prize for the European Novel (2004) for Atonement. He was awarded a CBE in 2000. His novel Saturday won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 2006 and On Chesil Beach won the Galaxy Book of the Year award at the 2008 British Book Awards where he was also named Reader’s Digest Author of the Year.
