For the first time in three years, the MSO performs at Frankston Arts Centre, accompanied by the powerful MSO Chorus! Messiah, one of Handel’s most well-known compositions, contains several wonderful musical passages, including a triumphant and motivational Hallelujah chorus. Join us for Handel’s most popular and often performed piece with soprano Kathryn Radcliffe, mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd, tenor Louis Hurley, and bass Christopher Tonkin.

MSO Chorus

Benjamin Northey will be in charge of the MSO in December. The piece, written in 1741, is still as powerful as it was 280 years ago, bringing delight and awe to new listeners and audience members who have sung along for a long time. Messiah, one of the most lasting compositions of all time, was written by Handel in approximately 24 days. After starting at the end of August in 1741 and finishing by the middle of September, without including the 48 hours it took him to figure out the orchestration from his rough manuscript swiftly.

On 13 Apr 1742, Messiah made its public debut in Dublin’s Musick Hall. Dublin rapidly became one of Europe’s most prosperous cities, and many affluent listeners were eager to hear new, exciting material. Enjoying a complimentary welcome drink and then a delectable plate of canapés to create the mood is the ideal way to enjoy a theatre experience. You can socialize with other audience members or reserve a spot to meet with pals.

Biography

George Frideric Handel’s Messiah is undoubtedly the greatest and most beloved of the significant choral compositions of Western music; it radiates happiness and humanity from beginning to end and celebrates our relationship with God. To maintain his livelihood at a time when pricey operas were losing popularity and becoming more challenging to stage, Handel wrote Messiah in just 24 days. Handel turned to scripture rather than a theatrical story to direct him as he composed his musical masterwork.

Handel’s tremendous philanthropy supported the first three performances of Messiah in Dublin, and each was a smashing success. The National Arts Center Orchestra is happy to play this festive classic under the direction of conductor Patrick Dupré Quigley. The Cantata Singers of Ottawa have collaborated annually with the NAC Orchestra since the NAC’s debut in 1969. Experience the pleasure and mystery of Messiah this holiday season, and sense the wonder and optimism that few other holy compositions can convey.
