About Elizabeth Kostova

Kostova was born Elizabeth Z. Johnson in New London, Connecticut and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she graduated from Webb School of Knoxville. She earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award for her novel-in-progress in 2003. She married a Bulgarian scholar and took his name.

She published her first novel, The Historian, in 2005 and it has become a best-seller.

The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation was established in May 2007. As well as supporting Bulgarian creative writing, the Foundation supports translations of contemporary Bulgarian literature into English, as well as friendships between Bulgarian authors and Americans and British authors.

The Swan Thieves was Kostova’s second novel, released on January 12, 2010. The Shadow Land was her third novel, published in 2017.
