About Donald Hamilton
Donald Hamilton wrote novels, short stories, and non-fiction about the outdoors. The majority of his novels are paperback originals, primarily spy fiction but also crime fiction and Westerns. His best-known series, Matt Helm (1960-1993), portrays an undercover counter-agent/assassin working for a secret American government agency.
In 1946, Hamilton began writing for magazines such as Collier’s Weekly and The Saturday Evening Post. He published thirty-eight novels over the course of forty-six years starting with Date With Darkness in 1947. Between 1954 and 1960, his suspense, spy, and western novels were typically paperback originals of the era, depicting fast-moving tales in lurid covers. Several classic western movies were adapted from his western novels, including The Big Country and The Violent Men.
Gold Medal Books published the Matt Helm series in 1960, which ran for 27 books, ending in 1993 with The Damagers.

“I learned that Nordic beer comes in three grades of potency. The lowest grade is apparently a kind of beer-flavored soft drink that can safely be fed to babies; the highest is, to hear them tell it, loaded with atom juice. It sounded worth investigating, but when I asked for it I was regretfully informed that the place couldn’t supply it, since their license didn’t extend to such violent stuff. I had to settle for Grade Two, known as ordinary pilsener.”

“There’s nothing more frightening to me than a character who thinks he knows what a real American is – mainly because it generally turns out he’s convinced it’s somebody like him. It seems an odd notion to me. I certainly don’t want to live in a country populated with people just like me, God forbid! Anyway, I figure there’s room for a little variety in a nation as big as ours.”
