About Daphne du Maurier

In 1907, Daphne du Maurier was born at 24 Cumberland Terrace, Regent’s Park, London, the second of three daughters of actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and actress Muriel, née Beaumont. Her life resembles a fairy tale in many ways. She was born into a family with a rich artistic and historical background, with her paternal grandfather, the Punch cartoonist George du Maurier, who created the character Svengali in 1894’s novel Trilby, and her mother, Comyns Beaumont, a journalist, author, and lecturer. Growing up, she and her sisters enjoyed tremendous freedom from financial and parental restraints. Her elder sister, Angela du Maurier, became a writer, and her younger sister, Jeanne, became a painter.

One Final Bonus – Daphne du Maurier Quote

“We can never go back again, that much is certain. The past is still close to us. The things we have tried to forget and put behind us would stir again, and that sense of fear, of furtive unrest, struggling at length to blind unreasoning panic – now mercifully stilled, thank God – might in some manner unforeseen become a living companion as it had before.”
― Daphne Du Maurier, Rebecca
