About Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author of 18 books. Among her themes are the Indian experience, contemporary America, women, immigration, history, myth, and living in a multicultural world. Over 100 of her works have been published in magazines and anthologies, including Dutch, Hebrew, Hindi, and Japanese. Numerous awards have been given to her, including an American Award

Award and the international Premio Scanno Prize. Also, Divakaruni writes for children and young adults.

Her latest book is Oleander Girl (Simon and Schuster, 2013). She is working on her upcoming novel Before We Visit the Goddess (about three generations of women who explore the question of “what does being a successful woman mean.” April 2016, Simon & Schuster.)

There have been two movies based on her books, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart. The rights to her novels One Amazing Thing and Palace of Illusions have been optioned. A play based on her collection of stories, Arranged Marriage, has been produced.

Originally from India, she studied at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a Master’s degree and a Ph.D.

She teaches in the nationally ranked Creative Writing program at the University of Houston. She sits on the Advisory boards of Maitri in the Bay Area and Daya in Houston, organizations that assist South Asian or South Asian American women in abusive situations. Additionally, she is closely involved with Pratham, an organization that helps educate children (especially those living in slums) in India.

She has judged several prestigious awards, including the National Book Award and the PEN Faulkner Award.

Her husband Murthy and two sons, Anand and Abhay, are named after the characters in her children’s books.
