History of Byron Bay

The first European establishment in the Byron Bay began in the year 1770, when a safe anchorage was found by Lieutant James Cook. He named Cape Byron after John Byron, his fellow sailor.

The first industry to occur here was cedar logging followed by gold mining. The other industrial production untill 1963 was dairy factory, abattoirs, whaling and fishing. In 1960s the Longboard surfers landed here and that marked as the beginning of tourism in Byron Bay and with the Aquarius Festival in 1973, this place established a reputation of a happy, easygoing and hippy town and an amazing tourist destination.

Things To Do

There are many beaches in this town that makes it a popular place for surfing and other adventurous sports. Kayaking with the dolphins, snorkeling and scuba diving are other amazing things that you can do here. If you want an adrenaline rush, you can try skydiving

Whale watching at Byron Bay is one thing that you should not miss. You can also cycle or walk Cape Byron lighthouse along the oceanway runs.

The Nightcap National Park

is also at a closed vicinity of this town, you can also plan a visit there.

The Byron Bay Triathlon is also a popular event heldon May’s second Saturday every year.
