Victoria, the southeast state of Australia, receives a host of travellers throughout the year, courtesy, of the beauty of the place and the pleasant climate. The climate of Australia remains pleasant throughout the year, which makes it comfortable for the travellers to travel at any time of the year without much hesitation, a few months though become nasty.

The Varied Victorian Climate

Though Victoria is geographical, the smallest state in Australia, but the climate of this state is quite varied. A few parts of Victoria are hot, while a few are cool. The temperature ranges from semi-arid temperate featuring hot summers in the north-west region of Australia, to cool temperate climate along the coast of the state.

Compared with the other states and territories of the Australian mainland, Victoria is wetter and cooler. The reason is quite obvious, the southernmost location.

The Great Dividing Range is in the mainland of Victoria and thus the mainland has a cool mountain climate. The Victorian Alps which is a part of the Great Dividing Range is the coolest part of the Victorian mainland. This place also receives a lot of tourists. If you are planning to visit the Victorian Alps, do not forget to carry your winter wear with you. The average temperature recorded in this region during the winter season is less than 9 degrees  (48 °F). In the highest part of the ranges the temperature goes below 0 °C (32 °F). The lowest temperature recorded here was −11.7 °C (10.9 °F) in Omeo.

The coast of Victoria features a relatively mild climate. The temperate region and this is also the place where Melbourne, the second-largest city of Australia is situated. Air that comes from the Southern Ocean play a big part in reducing the heat of the summer as well as the cold of the winter. In the months of April/ May, when the autumn arrives, these parts feature colourful vegetation and look very pleasant.

Talking about the warmest regions of Victoria, the Mallee and the upper Wimmera are the warmest. The hot winds that blow in these regions come from the semi-deserts located nearby. The average temperature in this region shoots up to 32 degrees (90 °F)  and more during the summer season and drops down to about 15 degrees (59 °F)  in the winter season. The highest maximum temperature in Victoria was 48.8 °C (119.9 °F), which was recorded during the second World War.

Victoria is the second wettest state in Australia coming next only to Tasmania. Victoria receives more rain in the winter season than in the summer season.

Best Time To Visit Victoria

You can plan your visit according to your climatic preference. If you like hot, visit during November – February, i.e., during the summers. If you do not like hot season, visit during the spring season (September – October) or during autumn (March – April). But, even in spring, you can experience a few hot days. The winter months between May to August get very cold, so it’s better to avoid any tour during these months of the year.
