What I love about stoicism is the thought of always remembering death. Understanding that you have lived a certain number of hours (and not the fact that you will live as many more) gives an invaluable sense of transience. And this is not a cliché, this is a real opportunity to learn to honestly evaluate what we are capable of and how we are responsible for the quality of our life.
From this perspective, self-esteem, generosity, work ethic, mindfulness and attention become even more important. The last thing any of us would want is to die regretting what we have lived through. Fewer comparisons, less criticism, less consumption; more creativity, learning, and action.
