Microsoft windows 10 review – New apps, Edge browser and new Start menu make it ever best Windows OS yet. Let’s have a detailed review that why you should upgrade now if you still hadn’t.
Windows 10 Features and Specifications – What’s new?
Many windows users hadn’t like windows 8 due to disappearance of start menu, and here is good news for windows 7 lovers that in Windows 10, start menu is back with improvement containing all windows standard apps in modern User Interface (UI). At bottom, there is shortcut for “All apps” and shortcuts for Settings, File explorer and standby/shut down.
You can re-arrange tile, resize and create titles groups on Start Menu as it is customizable, further you can revert to your favorite start screen of (Previous version inspired) Windows 8 as desired as Microsoft has kept the windows 8 start screen functionality on the right side with customizable live titles so you can have easy access to your calendar and emails etc. and respond immediately.
Windows 8 style full screen titles concept was best for tablets as touch makes sense but it is fine if you’re fan of windows tiles concept and want to use it without touch on your laptop or desktop. Shortcuts or pinning concept is what made life easier especially when you are free to pin anything such as pin doesn’t mean merely creating shortcut but it can create an easy access to your favorite stuff such as features and functions within your desired apps, like you loved any conversation on fb, you can pin it, email threads in email app, and in travel app some journey too so on.
Windows 10 Notifications
Well, windows 8 notifications thing was much better than this new OS but it is similar to action center of Win Phone 8, as for common setting, complete set of toggle buttons for desktop and tablet mode such as flight mode, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, location, battery saver mode, brightness and more, you can collapse and expand as per desire. You can simply swipe from the right to display notifications bar if you missed pop-up while it appeared in the bottom right corner to check app-wise divided notifications and clear them one by one or fell swoop at once.
Search and Cortana in Windows 10
The very impressive move in windows 10 is search box sticks on taskbar however, earlier we always seen it in start menu or in windows 8 it was completely hidden. So now whatever you want to know or want to search, the search box is always ready to serve.
You might know Cortana if you are Windows Phone 8 user, she is like your personal assistant to serve you instantly and even you can talk to her. The very first time you click search box you will get prompt enabling Cortana. In Windows 10, Search and Cortana are same features, one can proceed your written request while other will enable microphone to reel off.
Beauty of search when you start typing and Windows 10 will show up list of matching files, settings, apps, even apps from windows store so you can look up what exactly you need before completing your query. You can look up web results too, in short all windows phone features imported in windows 10 so now you can type or ask anything such as “What is the weather today” and Cortana will open weather app for forecast. You can set reminders too associating with people and places by asking Cortana, and you will get reminders on exact time. Moreover, Cortana can access important info from emails to set reminders such as flight numbers and reminding you on time so you can avoid delays. Suppose, if Cortana fails to proceed to your question, it will still open Windows edge web browser to list down all relevant searches.
Windows 10 Apps
Photos app has been updated but you would be asked to choose default photo viewer the very first time when you will try to open any photo as old photo viewer is still there for your preference. Windows 8 users will be familiar with updated one. I must say it is a worth using photos app which allows you to get pictures from OneDrive too and allows you to edit on time.
Instead of pre-installed skype, your will get advert in start menu that can take users to the store for downloading skype app for free. Surprisingly, even Microsoft owned it but you have to install manually.
If you hadn’t used OneNote ever, it is time to give it a try as now it is part of Windows 10. OneDrive integrated Evernote style windows app allows you to create notes containing lists, texts, maps, images and much more.
Microsoft has improved maps app too such as addition of StreetSide is similar to street view of google, so now you can find nearby places according to your interest, getting exact directions for walk, public transport or drive, and virtual tours too.
- Mail and Calendar apps
Microsoft office isn’t there but there are Mail and Calendar apps. A clean looking email client app allows you to handle multiple accounts including Exchange, google, iCloud and Outlook.
- Music app
This app contains your local music as well as any of your previously stored music on OneDrive. Moreover, it is also integrated with Groove (MS music streaming service) that can be accessed by buying premium membership such as £8.99/month or £89.90/year which is still cheaper than Spotify and apple.
- Movies & TV app
Movies & TV app comes with three different sections such as TV, Movies and Videos and allows you to rent or buy videos from MS store.
- Microsoft Edge (Windows 10 default web browser)
Microsoft Edge become default browser that is fully integrated with OneDrive with having notation tools for editing and guiding marks on web pages before sending them to others, also it allows bookmarks import from other web browsers, form filling support, drag and drop tags, and passwords too. However, Internet Explorer is still part of Windows 10 and can be used for compatibility purposes.
Time to mourn
Windows 10 doesn’t have Windows Media Centre which was default windows app for photos, music and videos.
If you are windows user, you must be getting notification for upgrade to Windows 10 as it is free to upgrade for you.
Author Notes – Windows 10 Review
There is no reason to avoid this free windows 10 upgrade as combination of new features with old windows 7 features made windows OS more attractive. If you are frequent user of OneDrive (Cloud data saving service) and have habit of storing your important data such as documents, photos, videos, music and notes for easy access, then windows 10 is highly recommended for you as it is fully integrated with OneDrive.
