Zoom and perspective – How they affect the quality photography?

Zoom and perspective – How they affect the quality photography?Zoom and perspective – How they affect the quality photography? The perspective can be changed only when camera is moved back and forth and not through zoom lens. Zoom lens can only change the picture content. In landscape photography the two areas to be taken care of are zoom and perspective. For zooming wide angled lens is needed to maximize the depth of the field and also to focus on everything in the picture. As you zoom in, the objects are made to look closer than actually they are, that way sense of perspective is flattened.

Zooming also affects the extent of picture in focus. Utmost care is to be taken when you click the photograph in zoom mode as any small camera shake will have effect exaggerated and that leads to blurred image. The sense of perspective in a photograph can be increased with the use of lens of wide angle and by addition of something in the foreground or background.

Alternately the same effect can be obtained with use of low viewpoint and wide setting of angle since in such a situation contrast in shape and size of objects can be obtained. The most alluring feature of compact digital cameras is the zoom range of the lens in camera. As the lens is not interchangeable in compact digital cameras like SLR cameras the zoom range becomes significant in those cameras. However there is a limit to this range which depends on the type of lens used.

Zoom and perspective – How they affect the quality photography? The zoom range of the camera is defined as the ratio of longest focal length possible of the lens to the shortest focal length possible. The maximum value of lens aperture will get reduced as you try zooming camera lens longer. Change in lens in SLR camera increases the zoom range that is higher than that possible in point and shoot camera. Digital zoom is a mechanism used in point and shoot cameras to create longer zoom range with saving in costs of optical design. In digital zoom the image is formed by the central part of sensor only.

Zoom and perspective – How they affect the quality photography?

Using of digital zoom will make the image quality inferior but perspective will remain the same as perspective is not dependent on focal length but is dependent on distance between the subject and camera. There is false impression that wide angle lenses are responsible for expanding and distorting the perspective while telephoto lenses do the compression of perspective. But the truth is there is no change in perspective, the only change is narrow angle of view when using optical and digital zoom.

Zoom and perspective – How they affect the quality photography? The only difference in the two is entire sensor is used when optical zoom is operational while only a small central part of the sensor is used in case of digital zoom. The re-sampling required to be done has to be completed before saving of image in the form of jpeg data. If you believe in having quality photographs don’t compress the photographs too much just to save time and space. What so ever may be the reason for using digital zoom one thing is sure it is different from optical zoom. This will bring in compromise in quality of photography for sure.
